The Key to Success in Any Endeavor Lies in Building Relationships.
Last Tuesday, the 4th and 5th graders who attended this year’s Summer Raider Academy in Massena Central School District made their learning public in an exhibition at Nightingale Elementary. The students and teachers had formed learning communities around the essentials elements of Project Based Learning, featuring in-depth learning and real world connections and application.
The 4th graders were actively involved in one of two projects. One project, titled Community Helpers, involved students surveying needs of people in the community and ways they could support them. The other 4th grade project focused on planning a cross-country trip, selecting routes, accommodations, points of interest, and keeping a video travel diary.
The 5th graders worked in teams to design food trucks and menus, as well as learning about the culture of the country their food represented. The entry event of the food truck project was a visit by the food truck from An Italian Affair. A highlight of the project happened at the project exhibition when Aaron and Devin Jolley (owners of An Italian Affair restaurant and food truck visited the exhibition to talk to the student teams and discuss their rationale for the food trucks they designed and the countries they selected.

The School of Innovation did not always look like the school you see in this video. As a matter of fact, just two years ago the makeup and mission of the school were completely different. The school administrator, Gary Cross, will be doing a guest blog post later this week. For now, check out the video. https://youtu.be/GY0ZODgOs20
Wonderful PBL with real life connections happening at School of Innovation at SCSD. There will be some upcoming guest blog posts from the school, but we wanted to "whet your whistle" for their work. Art teacher Jeffrey Brunner's students did a project called "Bowls for Life" and the students presented the bowls to children at the Springfield Soup Kitchen. More about the project will be coming from Mr. Brunner- for now check the article from the Springfield News-Sun.
